About
Digital As-Builts (DABs) is an Every Day Counts (EDC-6) Initiative of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Office of Planning designed to help transportation professionals shift toward a paperless process for tracking, documenting, and archiving materials information. DABs are living records that are updated during construction to support effective life cycle asset and performance management.
The EDC-6 DABs Initiative focuses on enhancing the accessibility of highway project data from design to asset management. DABs include 3D design models and other metadata that can be used across the entire project lifecycle. These applications have been selected for their proven ability to enhance safety, accelerate project delivery, and save costs. Activities include the documentation and dissemination of practices, encouraging and facilitating peer-to-peer learning to enhance technology exchange, and providing information on how to establish routine operations for DABs across mature use cases.
